Turning Tech, A Difficult Journey

Last summer, I taught digital storytelling at a hot shot National conference on tech here at Lane CC. Teachers came from all over the US to learn about teaching with tech–but this was an ADVANCED group who were supposed to already have a strong tech background. But as I discover in this video, technophobia seems to be everywhere!

  1. Oh to be Human and have things not be perfect. 🙂 I think the honesty in having things “not go as planned” is a wonderful personality maker. How does one react to unexpected adversity? Laugh, cry, sweat, swear, run away?
I enjoyed in the video the teacher that empowered her students to fix the problem.. Team work.. a common goal.. That is what life is about. (stated by someone whom stuggles to ask for help)

  2. I think you mentioned this elsewhere…and yes, we have a whole population of students who are in the same position–that’s why we sometimes call this Last Chance College 🙂
I for one am very happy to help anyone who is looking for a new lease on life. 🙂

  3. Ha!
NEVER! We are all burning up inside. One reason I prefer to teach online is because I can’t stand the way students all stare at me making judgments (so I imagine it) about how I look, what I am wearing, what I say and how I say it. They stare rudely at their cell phones as if I couldn’t tell…and so on! I am much more comfortable online where I know there are still judgments but mostly I can’t see them and worry about them so much! And that’s the truth, Ruth!
    🙂

  4. I never really thought about teachers getting anxiety when things go awry-they all seem to keep their cool most of the time. It has opened my eyes to teachers having anxieties too! I mean, I know they’re people and have emotions and feelings obviously, but I always thought they’d be used to being in front of a class with things going right or wrong.

  5. This is a story I can definitely relate to. I have friends, myself included, that have been in trouble with the law before and consequentially were separated from the advancement of some technology. I say some because even when it is a short period tech changes all the time. Coming out I had this deep fear that I would not understand much of the tech that was available today, blogs included. However, presently I am grateful for this experience and look forward to learning all that blogging has to offer.
